Josep Maria Bartomeu has left his position as President of Barcelona Football club amid ongoing criticism and looming vote of no confidence.
Bartomeu is not the only one leaving his post. The entire board is also stepping down from their post.
Bartomeu’s resignation come after months of criticism from fans in the wake of Barcelona’s 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, as well as Lionel Messi’s request to leave the club.
Although Barca were able to hold on to messi, fans believe the Argentine only stayed to avoid taking the club to court.
Since then, Bartomeu’s position has been under scrutiny.
Club members went on to hold a vote of no confidence even though Bartomeu had up to just next year to end his tenure.
16,250 signatures were required for the motion against Bartomeu to go through. At the end, 20,687 signatures were gathered.
Barca Board tried postponing the votes but local Authorities rejected the Board’s request.
Bartomeu originally joined Barca during Joan Laporta’s presidency and ascended to that role himself in January 2014.
He replaced Sandro Rosell, becoming the 40th President of Barcelona as he signed on to complete the rest of Rosell’s tenure following his resignation.
During his tenure, Barca won the la-liga four times as well as winning the 2014/2015 champions league.
However, Bartomeu will be remembered by the club’s failings in his final days.
